Toonies for Tummies- Twitter Chat Jan 27 9pm ET #Toonies4Tummies

Toonies for Tummies is asking for your help!

I was quite surprised to hear that 1 in 6 Children in Canada are unsure where their next meal is coming from. As a Canadian parent, this is very upsetting.

I was aware there is a problem, but entirely unaware of the actual statistics!

To think that there are so many Canadian Children out there going without meals is heart wrenching. ANY Children going without meals is awful, and this is just so close to home.

When I was a child, I had a friend, I won’t mention names or ages or genders… but this friend NEVER had a lunch. In fact, this friend used to come to my house for lunch all the time. (I lived down the street from the school.) My Dad would ensure that we had a nice warm, delicious lunch to fill our hungry bellies and back off to school we would go.

I will never forget that friend. Ever.

I am so excited to participate in the Toonies for Tummies campaign and hope you will be too.

More About Toonies for Tummies

In conjunction with the amazing support of other Canadian retailers as well as consumer goods, beverage and food companies, The Grocery Foundation will be raising money to aid in the funding of nutritious and healthy snacks and breakfasts for many different programs in Atlantic Canada and Ontario. Programs that could help someone in your neighborhood.

Some Startling Statistics

  • In 2012, 4 million individuals in Canada, including 1.5 million children experienced some level of food insecurity.  That is enough to fill 23,960 school buses.1
  • In Canada, 1 in 7 children start the school day on an empty stomach due to a lack of access to nutritious foods. 2

Makes you think. right!?

How You Can Help Toonies for Tummies

From Feb 5-19, when you shop at the Toonies for Tummies participating retailers in Ontario or Atlantic Canada, you will be given the opportunity to donate a Toonie.
For $2, a sample meal consists of: a grilled cheese sandwich on whole wheat, orange wedges, and a ½ cup of milk.
100% of all the funds raised at the till will most certainly be donated. In fact, they will go to local initiatives and programs. It’s important that you are aware of that so you know where your money is going.
The Grocery Foundation’s goal is to reach $1,000,000 raised for 2015 and with your help, they will obtain that goal!

Track Your Toonie

To help ensure the funds make their way to schools in your community that will most benefit from your generous support, we are working with various agencies who oversee breakfast and nutrition programs to identify local schools in the neighbourhood of participating stores.  You can go online and see the various schools / communities that are benefiting from the monies raised using the Toonie Tracker!

As a Thank you for Your Help

I’d be happy to donate $2 when I’m shopping for groceries. It’s nice to see that so little can make such a big difference. Thanks for the heads up on the twitter party! I’ll be joining the chat today for sure.
