Baby Eczema Treatment- We Were Misinformed
When my Baby Girl was actually a very young baby girl, her skin looked awful. My Baby had Terrible Eczema!
We were misinformed.
We had spent hours on end researching to no avail, we saw our doctor several times a week, we were given advice from everyone, parents, family members, doctors… Nothing worked.
We felt helpless.
That is until we saw the most amazing dermatologist. She saved us, and our daughters skin.
Baby Eczema Treatment That Worked For Us:
We were told not to change her formula, we were also informed that there was no correlation between milk or lactose intolerance and eczema. So, we saved ourselves the feeding battle and changed her back to her regular formula.
Bathing her twice a day in a warm bath with a cap full of Aveeno Oil was also recommended, afterwards we pat her dry and then apply then medicated ointments that we were prescribed. We are very thorough and make sure we get a light covering of all the patches on her body and focus on the sweat points.
After we dry her and apply the ointments, we make sure to then apply a very thin layer of Vaseline all over her body.
Important Things we Have to Remember:
We were told to avoid things that could produce skin irritations on contact.
We now avoid too much exposure to grass, perfumes, scented lotions, scented soaps and abrasive detergents. We wash all our laundry in a hypoallergenic detergent.
We were told when feeding her, we should put a layer of Vaseline on her face to protect her skin from coming into contact with anything to acidic.
We ensure that all her clothing, sheets and blankets are 100% cotton so that they are breathable.
The Result:
Baby Girl is now 2 years old and hasn’t broken out in a long time. We are diligent in ensuring that we follow our skin care regime. However, now that her skin is not even close to as severe as it was, we can avoid two baths a day and just do one at night. We can also skip the ointment step when she doesn’t have any patches or irritation and go straight to the thin layer of vaseline. We only apply the ointment if patches or irritation rear their ugly heads.
Remember:
If your baby has eczema it can be frustrating for everyone. We had very little sleep for the first year of Baby Girl’s life, she was so itchy.
It is important to find something that works for you and your family in terms of treatment. NEVER settle for advice that isn’t working. Go with your gut, if you feel like you want a second opinion, get one!
Do You or Someone You Know Have Eczema? How Long Have You Had it?

Sounds like a long battle! Glad that the doctor was able to help find a regime that works. I know many people who suffer with sink issues and it can be very uncomfortable. Congrats on your success!
I feel you. My littlest guy has been a mess. His poor bum was so bad it was peeling off in layers! I freaked out. He was like a lizard – scales from the top of his head to his feet. Oy.
We were told by everyone the same thing. No baths, cut out food, etc etc. but the dermatologist said not to cut out food, and to bathe him 3 times a day! lol. Still taking a little bit of a hit and miss learning cycle as we try to figure out what’s the best for him, but it’s amazing to see clear skin 90% of the time! As long as we put some betaderm ointment on him asap when the signs appear that it’s acting up – he’s good.
So glad your peanut is doing better! 🙂
You must have seen the same dermatologist Lisa!
She had the same ointments too and was the same from head to toe! We were given almost the same information too!
So happy to hear she has found relief and hasn’t had an outbreak in a long time. I hope your regime keeps providing positive results for her. We have battled eczema in our household too, and my son had it as a baby (although not as bad as that picture). It’s so upsetting to see them suffer and not know how to help it 🙁 Very happy your doctor helped you find a solution 🙂
That’s so good that things are better now and you got the right info finally. It’s hard as many doctors no matter speciality they are in have their own opinions based on medical practices and years of training they received. It still goes by what they think, and what they think isn’t always right. It’s also sad that many things like this are not cut and dry but more trial and error. Glad it’s worked out! 🙂
Oh this breaks my heart, but I’m so glad that your sweetheart hasn’t had an eczema episode as of late. My nephew had it so bad – and they ended up having to move out to the west almost immediately. If we look back at his first year of photos, and compare it to the post-move… there is SUCH a remarkable difference. My brother listened to his gut – as you did. They were given so many solutions that just didn’t work but they finally found something that did!
A friend of mine has bad eczema and so does her daughter – I’m not sure how they are treating it. My daughter (1) has had some itchy patches of skin and a bad rash on her cheeks, and we’re trying to figure out the causes… doesn’t seem like eczema but not sure. Thanks for sharing!
