The lovely tween age, where your child isn’t quite a teenager yet is no longer that little child either. This middle stage of childhood development can be quite difficult. It is all in preparation for those joyous teenager years. Today we will discuss ways you can fix rude tween behavior quickly, before those behaviors become habits.
Fix Rude Tween Behavior
- Create Clear Rules & Boundaries – during the tween years you will need to ramp up your parental duties. Yo may need to tweak them a bit and be certain to set forth clear rules and boundaries along with consequences that make sense. Discuss these with your tween beforehand, so that they are on the same page with what you expect from them.
- Consequence Must Fit the Crime & Age – no longer will a little timeout work because your tween is passed that elementary/toddler age. Consequences for bad tween behavior needs to be extreme in that you are taking away something beloved to them. You will have to pull out the big guns because no longer will the reward of an ice cream cone work during this stage.
- Discuss your Concerns – when your tween is behaving rudely to you with a lack of respect, try to have an adult-like conversation with them. Give examples of how their words and behavior make you feel, discussing your concerns in a matter of fact manner, may help them step back and realize the negative impact their behavior is having on others.
- Be the Example – remember your tween may think they are an adult who no longer needs your parenting, but they need you now more than ever. When you become the example of what you expect for behavior from your tween, you set the standards in expectations and in turn allow your tween to visualize acceptable behaviors to mold into their own unique ways.
- One-on-Time – this is a fantastic proactive measure against rude tween behavior, make sure to set aside one-on-one time with your tween. Have a once a week date with your tween over a meal or snack where you simply listen to them and what’s going on in their life. Showing you care about their day will really curb those rude tween behaviors.
