Being a work at home mom as it’s advantages and disadvantages. One of the disadvantages is that my Husband doesn’t quite understand what it is like to work from home…. not even a little bit.
5 Things My Husband Doesn’t Know About Being a Work at Home Mom
1. There is NO such thing as Uninterrupted work
That is unless I wait until after they are in bed to work, however, that is really only an option once in a while. Especially if I have a lot to do, otherwise I would be up all night catching up.
If I try to work during the day, there is either a child buzzing in my ear, a dog whining to go outside or someone ringing the doorbell… the second I sit down to get at it. Sometimes, it’s all those things at once… and then someone poops their pants.
2. Phone Calls are Confusing
Trying to take an important phone call, schedule a meeting or call the internet company because for some reason my internet is down… AGAIN, can be confusing. By confusing I mean that it is hard to focus when the second I lift the phone to my ear, my children, who I had already made sure were so busy with snacks, movies and a water bottle, decide that those things no longer amuse them. In which case, I find myself running while trying to keep this phone call going. Running up and down the halls, ducking in and out of closets. Hiding. From my children. So I can at least talk to someone without hearing “Mom, Mom, Mom, MOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM.”
The other variation of this battle is that my beautiful, lovely, adorable children, get bored with the things I tried to occupy them with, and instead try to fight each other over an old cheerio that was on the floor.
So husband, Please stop asking me to call the bank for you. You are alone in the car… pull over and call them yourself please.
3. 2 Year Olds Make it Impossible to Type
Not all the time, but whenever my daughter feels so inclined, she will bash the keyboard while I am trying to type something. She usually does this when I am trying to tweet someone, write a facebook post for my page or send an e-mail.
This can be scary when I am trying to tweet someone and she bashes the keyboard and I tweet a company something messed up such as: ” Thank you for the Follow! I aisop sdif;alk.,m fkjdald;f’s|” by accident.
4. Finding Time to Work can be Hard
Trying to find the time to sit down and work can be difficult. Especially when I have both kids at home, 2 dogs, a growing laundry pile and meals to make. I have no specific work schedule as it changes every single day to cater to the needs of the tiny people and furry munchkins in our home.
It is also very hard to work when everyone is talking to me, making obnoxious noises or when my husband asks me a million questions in the middle of a train of thought. Was it really important to ask me what time the mailman comes, right this second?
5. I do NOT sit on my butt all day eating bon-bons on Facebook
There have been comments made by my husband, that state everytime he looks over I am on facebook and not “working”, so…
Firstly, social media is a big part of what I do. If I am on Facebook… I can still be working.
SECONDLY, That is not ALL I do either, it just so happens that he seems to think I just sit here with my feet on the table eating chocolate and gabbing on Facebook… but I am also writing posts, sharing others and arranging different events. Either way, I am not JUST on facebook all day, and he would see that if he actually looked and didn’t just assume that was what I was doing.
Husband: Uhm Hunny Why are You using the Twitter now? Is it because I said something about Facebook?

I hear ya! This sounds like my work-at-home day too. 🙂 And my hubby doesn’t get it either, no matter how many times I try to explain to him or what I do (or say that Facebook is my job because of my blog and therefore necessary, not just fun). Thanks for sharign!

I work at home along with my significant other so we don’t ever have this problem.

And we aren’t playing on twitter or watching talk shows or entering contests …..I hear you. The juggle and understanding by others can be tricky, but you are not alone!!!!

haha yes, this can be confusing for the whole family. the blog world “looks” fun. by which I mean there are cartoon characters, bright colours, pretty pictures etc all over the place and it “looks” like we are “playing” on the internet when in reality that is our work! The kids don’t understand this either. and hubs works from home occasionally and when he does I rush around making sure everyone is quiet and he gets his work done, when I work during family time he tells me to get off the nerd box. sigh…..
I hear that! Especially since I am bubblegum pink! LOL. I have the same problem, as hubby HAS worked from home before but when he does, I take them outside or to the room to watch a movie… etc. etc.
Ha. As I am writing this comment my 4 year old is dancing next to me, singing over and over “Mail is here, mail is here mom! come get the mail”. To switch it up every few seconds she plays with my pony tail, or attempts to hang her binoculars off my shoulder. Uninterrupted work is a fantasy. Unicorns, rainbows, bottomless coffee, a quiet room where no one pokes me while I write….

I’m not a work-at-home-mom but I do a lot of work at home. It is a challenge and one that can be eternally frustrating when kids are loud and impossible to make phone calls but I try to remind myself that they will only be little for a short time. And, I often get a babysitter so I can go out and do work at Starbucks.
i’m not a WAHM, but my son does the same thing when i try to make a phone call. i’ll think i have him entertained or distracted so he doesn’t see me, but that never works out too well haha..
